By the terms of its license with Microsoft, Gateway was required to provide you with some mechanism for restoring Windows. Often, large OEMs like Gateway satisfy this requirement by installing a hidden partition on the hard drive that can be used to restore the computer to the state it was in when it left the factory. Unfortunately, if the disk fails, you can't use that hidden partition. Gateway may (its been a long time since I last bought a Gateway computer) have given you the option to create a set of restore CDs. I'm guessing that either no such option was provided .. or you ignored it. At this point, your only recourse is to persuade Gateway to provide you with restore media. They may or may not do it (they may claim that they no longer have XP media available given that it stopped being sold so long ago) and if they do, it may or may not be free. Because you have a computer manufactured by an OEM, Microsoft will not help you. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246 (although if Gateway tells you that it no longer has XP media, perhaps you can convince some sympathetic Microsoft customer service rep to treat your situation as if 'you purchased your software from a system builder who is no longer in business.' If your original hard disk is at all operational (the term 'hard disk crash' is often used incorrectly), you may be able to use cloning software to get the entire disk contents onto your new drive or at least the restore partition onto your new drive.
